PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Updated: Aug 5, 2019

Personal development: This covers personal growth, improvement on awareness, self-control, enchancing the quality of life and working on the realization of aspirations and goals.

Personal development doesn't only take place at one phase of one's life; it takes place over one's whole life. Personal development involves getting spiritually, economically, mentally and physical better everyday.

IMPROVEMENT FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

A) HEALTH: until you are healthy, the rest of the attributes associated with personal development are at risk of not being accomplished. An unhealthy individual has less relative capabilities to pursure his/her goals on a daily basis. Something I personally do, no matter how busy I may be, is spend at least an hour or so doing something that contributes to my goals. If I do not take care of my health, I wouldn't be able to sufficiently do so - I'd either be too exhausted or too ill to do anything productive as well as any other individual. Mental health is just as important as physical health. A peaceful and focused state of mind is a great accessory for personal development. Some times we have thoughts or situations that disturb our peace of mind and causes us to be in distress. If you notice you get bad or lazy over a particular thing, get rid of it. Because an unstable mind affects the heart and body negatively. If you haven't started, start today. Get rid of that bad habit, start eating more vegetables and fruits, go on walks alone, read more books and laugh more. It does good to the soul.

B) FRIENDS: the too many or too little people we have in our lives are one of the most important factors associated with personal development. Our friends become our family; they have the most impact on our lives and our personal development includes them in it. The ways of life of our friends become our ways of life too. I remember being told "you can hang and become friends with bad people and still remain good and vice versa. Not everyone can be influenced." Please do not be one of those. You wouldn't even realize when the changes are taking place. You'll just be sitting in ice cream shop and curse the waitress because she brought your vanilla ice cream a little later than you expected. Or you'd just realize that you changed your mode of dressing or you went from not smoking to smoking, not having drama in your life to drama every other day and perhaps not talking trash about other people to doing so on a daily basis. Why? Because your friends are doing so. The energy around you is the energy you adapt. Surrounding yourself around people with a positive mindset and a positive way of life feeds the same energy to your soul.

C) TIME MANAGEMENT: like the friendships, time management is also an important factor in personal development. Growing up, we have school, work, family and friends and hence very little time for ourselves. How one manages one's time is fully up to oneself depending on priority. You ought to know what you want to achieve and set an action plan towards it. While doing this, do not forget to make time for your friends and family. Showing them how much you love and appreciate them makes them feel good as well as yourself. Ensure you do not lose your loved ones in the process of getting and achieving your goals beacause when you do get to where you always wanted to be but have no loved one to share your happiness and success with, then what is the point?

Long story short, choose your friends wisely, try to learn new skills whenever you can, read books; a lot of them, take care of your health, go out, meet new people everyday and expanding your network. Try to get out of debt if you are in one, save your money, invest it in something productive, find yourself a mentor ( perhaps someone that insprires you. Do not be shy or afriad to reach out to him/her because you never really know, they could be willing to help you. While Thione Niang was in The Gambia, he mentored me for about three weeks and I remember the day he offered to mentor me and I was so thrilled but the man asked me to be at the Banjul International House at 8am the next day. Now if you know me, you know that's too early for me but like I said, you have to know what you want and go get it. Less than 3 weeks with Thione and I feel like I have learned what I haven't learned in 3 years of high school. My advice: reach out to who inspire you.) And lastly, stop the procrastination.
